The Hastings River was alive with laughter on Sunday 18th August, as Bob Downe brought his signature comedy to Port Macquarie on a one-day-only cruise aboard the Rhythmboat with Port AdVenture Cruises.
Known for his larger-than-life persona, Bob Downe—Australia’s beloved "Prince of Polyester"—delivered a performance that left passengers in stitches, proving once again that laughter truly is the best medicine.
Bob Downe, whose real name is Mark Trevorrow, has graced stages at some of the world’s most prestigious events, from the Edinburgh Fringe to the Royal Variety Performance before the Queen. His unique brand of humour, honed over decades, has made him a household name in Australia and beyond.
Veronica Lind, CEO of Brilliant-Online, had the chance to sit down with Bob for a quick chat, capturing a glimpse of the man behind the character.
The Birth of Bob Downe
Mark shared the origins of his famous alter ego, Bob Downe. Originally from Melbourne, Mark began his career as a journalist before transitioning into the entertainment industry. It was during a casual performance with friends in Melbourne that the seeds of Bob Downe were planted. The success of that show led to the formation of The Globos, a cabaret group that made waves in Sydney during the early 80s.
Bob Downe, with his retro style and playful humour, first emerged in 1984. Inspired by the TV entertainers Mark grew up watching in 1960s Melbourne, Bob quickly became a sensation. “Bob is like a little boy showing off,” Mark explains, “He’s a bit childish, and that’s what makes him fun.”
The Craft of Comedy
While Bob Downe’s comedy might seem effortless, Mark emphasises the hard work behind the laughs. “It takes 10 to 15 years to become a really first-rate comedian,” he says. The timing, delivery, and technique that go into each performance are the result of decades of dedication.
Life Beyond the Stage
Offstage, Mark admits that he’s not always in comedian mode. “I’m too exhausted to be funny all the time!” he laughs, revealing a more personal side. Growing up in a comedy-loving family, humour has always been a part of his life, but sometimes, even the funniest people need a break.
Looking Ahead
For those who missed the August cruise, there’s good news: Bob Downe is scheduled to return to Port Macquarie with more performances in October and November. “I love doing shows on a Sunday afternoon,” Mark says, noting the relaxed and joyful atmosphere of matinee performances.
And for those who can’t wait, Bob Downe’s music is also available on Spotify, offering fans a chance to enjoy his comedic stylings anytime.
